God is So Cool!

I was having lunch with a friend the other day (you know I lovingly refer to myself as a professional luncher) and we began to talk about the blessings of God.  We then began to exchange some stories about how God got the blessings to us and how funny those ways can turn out to be.  I have had people leave me money in my mailbox and on my front door.  I have come out of work and found a receipt under my windshield wiper showing my power bill was paid in full.  I had someone hand me a Gideon Bible one time with a $500.00 check in it.  I, in turn bless others when I can. God is so cool! When we focus on Him and do as the Bible says “seek Him and His righteousness first” (Matthew 6:33) then He WILL take care of us!

So, this friend tells me that she was running low on gas one day last week and she began to pray to God to please help her have the gas to get home and to go see a friend who was in need of a visit.  So, all of a sudden she runs into a mailbox with her rear view mirror! Her window was down (undoubtedly she was trying to conserve gas by not running the air) and glass comes flying into her car!!! Of course, no one was hurt.  She began to think that she was just clean it up when she got home, but something told her to pull into a nearby parking lot and begin to clean it up there.  So, she did (she is an awesome woman of God and felt the prompting of the Holy Spirit). Well, beside her tire laid a $10.00 bill!!! Some may say that it was chance. I don’t think so.  I think God was taking care of His child.  Before anyone freaks out on me……I know God doesn’t cause harm and wouldn’t cause her an accident!!!!!! BUT, I do know that God can use anything for good.  So, I thought it was pretty cool.  I think God is cool.  I think He can surprise us to no end if we just seek Him.

My husband and I have been through some major financial battles through our 18 years of marriage.  I had brain surgery, our daughter had a major jaw surgery, she wore braces for over 8 years, we have the loss of jobs, etc. I have just learned to trust.  I have learned that worry (in the words of Jesus) does not add a day to my life.  I can’t control what happened yesterday and I can’t really control what will happen tomorrow.  What I can control is how I react.  I can choose to react with faith.  I can choose to react with thanksgiving even when things look really, really bad. And, as I do that, God has shown me time and time again that He really is for me. He is faithful, even when I don’t deserve it.  He is so cool and I love serving Him with everything I have.  Be blessed!

Just a thought….

Will You Tear Off a Roof For Me????

My Mamow used to tell me that I would be very blessed to have a handful of what could be considered true friends.  I used to think she was crazy; I had tons of friends!  However, as I have gotten older I understand what she was saying. There was true wisdom in that.  I have found the ones who are true to me; who have been there for me in good and bad.  I have found that my true friends tell me the truth; whether I want to hear it or not.  They will also rebuke me and though it doesn’t feel good when they do it, I know they are simply following the Word of God which says “an open rebuke is better than hidden love”.  They rebuke me and tell me I am wrong because they love me and don’t want me to mess up. I do the same for them.

As I was reading the Bible a few nights ago, I came across the story in Luke 5:17 wherein friends lowered their crippled friend through the roof to get him to Jesus. It is summed up like this.  These guys really loved their friend and wanted him to get healed.  They knew that there was a man wandering around at the time who could do it with just one touch.  The man, who was called Jesus, was holding a meeting in a home and they couldn’t get their friend, who was on a cot, to him.  So, they figured out another way. They literally took the roof off and dropped the friend in front of Jesus!!  Now, I really want you to put yourself into that home.  Imagine being there, listening to Jesus talk, and all of a sudden, the roof starts coming off!  You look up and here are these crazy guys lowering their friend’s cot down to the main speaker!  Ok, I don’t know about you; but I think those are some true friends.  It turns out that Jesus was quite taken with their method and indeed their guy  did get healed.

My question to you is this:  are you that type of friend?  Are you the type of friend who would go to such lengths for someone you call a friend?  Are you there for your friends or do you shrug off the phone calls if you are too busy?

Take a lesson from these crazy guys who tore a roof off for their friend! We can learn from these guys; they crack me up!  I can just see them in my mind.  You know what—may I be like them!  May I be that kind of friend.  May nothing stop me from showing my friends Jesus.  May God put that kind of love in my heart…that I can be the kind of friend that, if necessary, will tear off a roof to deliver my friends to the feet of the Savior.

What Are U Waiting For?

Britt Nicole sings an awesome song called “Walk on the Water” and it speaks of “what are you waiting for? what do you have to lose?” It speaks of taking chances and in the end, being able to walk on the water like Peter did when he stepped outta that boat.

So, let me begin by asking you this—”what are you doing RIGHT NOW with what God has given you?”  Are you waiting for something?  Are you waiting for the perfect church position to open up?  Are you waiting for a bigger income?  Are you waiting to finish school or live out your “wild life” before you truly begin to serve God?  Tomorrow is never promised to any of us….so we have to serve God the best we can with what we have RIGHT NOW!

We have to make do with what God has given us RIGHT NOW.  Ministry isn’t just inside 4 walls of a church building!  It’s what we do everyday, with our family, our co-workers, people we meet on the street.  So, what are you waiting for???  Time is short, the harvest is plenty–get out there and use what you have TODAY!!! No more excuses!  Get to it!!!!

Giving All You Have to Give…

When we were in China in 2008 we took turns within our group doing a daily devotion.  When it came to my turn I spoke on the following scripture:

“When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”

Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”

“Tell me, teacher,” he said.

“Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,d and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”

Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled.”

“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.

Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. you did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.”

Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”

The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Why did I choose this? I am so glad you asked :) Every day when we went to the village to continue building the church, we would be welcomed by our welcoming committee (the women of the village) and then they would disappear for quite a while.  Eventually we would see them coming back, with bags full of fresh vegetables.  They would then all gather into a home and fix enough lunch for all of them, plus 12 of us on a 2 burner stove—the kind like we would take camping! Every day they did this for us.  Day in, day out. They would watch us eat, then they would eat the leftovers (if there were any).

As I began to think about them doing this for us, I couldn’t help but thinking of the above scripture.  You see, they were giving us the best that they could.  They had hardly nothing, but everything they did have, they were giving to us with a grateful heart.  They wanted to please us, they wanted to thank us.

Just like the woman in the story above; she was giving the best that she had to Jesus.  You see, they had that part of servant hood down.  So many of us do not.  We are always in too big of a hurry and too busy thinking of ourselves.  We don’t take the time to think of others and what would make them feel good.  Nor, do we always offer our best to Jesus. We make every excuse in the book as to why we can’t do something.  We don’t have time, we aren’t smart enough, we aren’t talented enough…the list goes on and on, when really all He wants is the best YOU have to offer.  He already knows you inside and out.  He already put everything within you that you need to do the purpose He created you for. Offer your best…I promise He is worth it.  He deserves it.  And you will never be as fulfilled as you are while doing God’s work.

Live What You Profess to Be!!

WARNING:  I AM ON MY SOAP BOX TODAY!  IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED PLEASE STOP READING HERE.  OTHERWISE, IT’S MY BLOG AND I CAN VENT ANY WAY I WANT :)   ALL IN LOVE OF COURSE

I am utterly sick and tired of people professing to be a Christian and yet they remain totally self absorbed.  I am so tired of people working side by side with people who are hurting and not caring enough to even ask what is going on in their lives.  I am so tired of people saying that they will pray for someone and they never do it.  Why? Because they are too selfish to remember that someone else has problems besides themselves.

If Jesus came to be a servant and we are His hands and feet now, then what do you think you are to be?? Case in point: I know someone who has just had financial ruin.  Terrible right?  It’s not like she purposefully didn’t pay her bills….she was taking care of her husband’s elderly mother.  Not, by the way, that that should matter, but to some it helps to know that the person is not a deliberate deadbeat.  In any event, I had conversations today with not 1 but 2 people who profess to be Christians who could not have cared less about this woman.   Yet, they snubbed it off with a “that’s too bad” and kept on with their lives.  I couldn’t.  I had to try to help.  I went to action. I remembered the WWJD bracelets that were popular years ago.  I had to try to make something happen. I will leave that with that.  Just know this—-God provides for His people and she will be fine.

What does the Bible say about this that has given me such a righteous anger today? I went looking.  He says this :

“If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:17-18

This is exactly my point! How can you claim to be a Christian and not care about anyone but you? This verse clearly states that you can’t. Period. End of story. The word of God doesn’t lie.

So, let me end my rant like this.  If you claim to be a Christian please live like one.  Please love others, help others, care for others (I mean genuinely care).  This is what God has exhorted us to do and to be.  If it doesn’t come easy for you, I get that.  Read the Bible and pray for that desire.  Better yet, go on a missions trip, either here in the US or overseas.  Spend time with the poor.  You will see that the things you worry about really don’t matter and the things you aren’t concerned with enough are what matters the most.
